Barcode Bar

When selecting a tracking technology to track assets there are several factors to consider. First, what is your goal? If the objective is to collect and manage data that you need to select the technology best suited to help you achieve that goal – not to let technology dictate how you will collect information regarding your information. Secondly, what kind of assets you will be monitoring – fixed or mobile? Examples of assets detained May include furniture, machinery, computers, etc. mobile assets, on the other hand, may include pallets, containers, racks, etc. Is this technology works best for fixed and mobile assets?

OK, once you've identified your target and well defined, it is time to take more closely examine the factors which may have an impact on the type of technology you plan to use. For example, consider the material composition of the monitoring element being metal, plastic, wood, etc., if we are specifically looking for bar code and identification technologies radio frequency, we must consider that RFID, more specifically the passive ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID has limitations when attached to active and active metal-containing liquids. Metal surfaces reflect RF detuning the antenna, thus affecting readability. Similarly, the liquid absorbs RF also affects readability. On the other hand, the surface composition products for bar code is not a factor. In addition, the radius or the contour of a surface also affects readability by using RFID technology, while that tags and barcode labels can be designed to radius or curved surface not affect readability. Other environmental factors which may affect the type of tracking technology that you may be using include heat, UV exposure, abrasion, chemicals and solvents. Many of these factors may cause RFID does not work while the bar code tags and labels can be designed to withstand exposure in difficult environments.

After reading the above information you think RFID may not be the answer. However, there are many advantages to using RFID as a tracking technology. First, RFID enables users the ability to read multiple items in a short period of time (ie container unit many cases, pallets, etc.) contrary to the code bar where you can scan one at a time. Secondly, the line of sight is not necessary when reading an RFID tag unlike the bar code where you to scan physically each image barcode. Thirdly, depending on the type of player used inlay, RFID has a much broader reading.

So, the bar code has its advantages and href = "http://www.idplate.com/rfid-tags-labels/rfid_applications/default.html"> RFID has its advantages too. Why not use both? Really there is a minimum additional investment for the barcode and use the two technologies will allow places that are not able to support RFID infrastructure to use the data simply by integrating bar code information in the RFID inlay.
