bad video card or power supply?
screen randomly crashes to checker board screen even while surfing the net. It’s a brand new ATI 5870 HD video card. Infact, the whole pc is brand new. It first started crashing while playing games and i checked the core temp to make sure it wasn’t overheating and everything seems fine. I even ran a benchmark test on it and it passed with flying colors about a month ago. Only problem is now it’s crashing with just a single web page up. I get the checkerboard screen and it just hangs there and it won’t recover and i have to reboot.
Ok… so what COULD it be? I mean, you are indeed asking what COULD it be? Because it is impossible to say what it DEFINITELY is based on your diagnostics so far…
It COULD be the power being supplied to the card. It COULD be that the card has developed an overheating problem WITHIN the last month. It COULD be a driver issue. It COULD be a bad card… they can and will go bad WHENEVER they are going to go bad.
So, what COULD you do? Well, let’s see…
benchmark the card AGAIN to ensure it has not developed issues…
uninstall and reinstall the video drivers…
Try a previous version of the video drivers… sometimes the latest are not the best for your complete hardware configuration…
reinstall your Operating System, because corrupt system files or malware/spyware infections can cause problems like this…
Try another video card to ensure it is not the slot or motherboard…
return it for a replacement card, to ensure it is not the card…
… all of these things are steps you can and should follow to diagnose the problem.
